Ice-cream & Absent Lovers
Marcie Lynn Tentchoff
Vanilla for
the boy from Iowa,
who sent me flowers picked
from his own garden, dark
as dirt, and scented with the
heady, musky scents of lust
and rain.
Strawberry for
my Atlantian prince,
who draped us both in clouds of
steam and swirling, raging tides, to
hide us from the angry eyes of
those who sought my place within
his bed.
Chocolate for
my armor clad dark knight,
who, grim and lonely, ordered
mirrors cast away, and lights
to be put out, then wept his
tears of blood and salt upon
my skin.
These Sunday
memories, soothing, sweet
and rich as caramel and fudge
upon my tongue, cool enough to
freeze away some of the pain
of partings, far too swiftly
melt away.
