Abyss & Apex : First Quarter 2007 : Jazz Sunsets by Marge Simon

Jazz Sunsets

Marge Simon

It’s a jazz sunset,
clear and personal,
blue and red music.
Sit away in the shadows,
be a voice…

The gulls knew her,
followed her path where
earth laps the horizon.

Once you saw her on stage,
a thousand waving arms
moving in unison,
keeping pace with the source,
that throbbing voice,
an epiphany of wings.

She is brine and foam,
laced with fire,
carving inner spaces
with her songs.

Follow the gulls
into such a sunset,
with skies punctuated
by blue–red musk,
a violet riff,
not of this earth.
