1Q 2015 Editorial: Where are they now?

Abyss & Apex has a deserved reputation for helping to launch writing careers.  Where are some of our authors, now?

Here, in alphabetical order, are just a few of the writers that started, at least in part, with us. We knew them when.

Aliette De Bodard is the author of ON A RED STATION, DRIFTING and the OBSIDIAN AND BLOOD series. If I list all of her awards, it would take up the entire editorial, but in case you want the long version, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliette_de_Bodard   We published her in A&A in the 2nd Quarter 2007 edition of A&A—“Weepers and Ragers”—and in the 2ndQ 2009 edition—“Dancing for the Monsoon.”

Marie Brennan, whose A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS: A MEMOIR BY LADY TRENT was nominated for a Nebula, a Hugo, and a World Fantasy award, was published by A&A in the 1stQ 2009 issue: “Letter Found In A Chest Belonging To The Marquis de Monsteraille, Following The Death Of That Worthy Individual” – although she was well on her way to deserved fame by then.

Karl Bunker was published by us, twice. Most notably, very early in his career his “Nomad” appeared in the 4th Q 2006 and was reprinted as the most popular story in our BEST OF A&A Vol. 1 anthology. He also was published 1st Q 2009 issue with his story, “Murder.” He’s gone on to not only get honorable mentions but be published in YBSF, as well as Asimov’s and Analog, and more. http://www.karlbunker.com/KarlBunker/The_Science_Fiction_Writing_of_Karl_Bunker.html

Rae Carson is the author of the popular GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS series (http://www.raecarson.com/books/), and we knew her when: Her “Becoming” was published by A&A in the 2nd Q 2006 edition.

J. Kathleen Cheney is the author of THE GOLDEN CITY (Locus Awards Finalist: Best First Novel, Locus Recommended Reading List for 2013, Library Journal’s Year’s Best SF/Fantasy of 2013, THE SEAT OF MAGIC and lots of great short fiction (http://jkathleencheney.wordpress.com/publications/). The GOLDEN CITY series is expanded from a novella of hers we published in 1st Q 2011 – “Of Ambergris, Blood, and Brandy.” Its third installment, THE SHORES OF SPAIN, is available for preorder and we can’t wait.

N. K. Jemsin is the author of THE INHERITANCE TRILOGY. Her short fiction has been published in a number of magazines and podcast markets, and has been nominated for Hugo and Nebula awards. THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS and THE BROKEN KINGDOMS were also nominated for (collectively) the Hugo, the Nebula, the Tiptree, the Crawford, the Gemmell, and more. She won the Locus Award for Best First Novel and the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award (twice). Nora published a story with us early in her career – “Bittersweet,” in the 1Q 2007 A&A.

Will McIntosh wrote “New Spectacles” and “Boxed” for A&A before he went on to become a Hugo-Award-winning science fiction author. He gone on to publish dozens of short stories in magazines like Asimov’s Science Fiction, Strange Horizons, Lightspeed Magazine, Daily Science Fiction, and Interzone.

Lisa Mantchev, the author of TICKER, and the THEATRE ILLIMINATA series wrote “Interfaith” which we published in our 3rdQ 2006 issue. TICKER is currently a best-seller on Amazon. (LINK)

Lavie Tidhar (http://www.amazon.com/Lavie-Tidhar/e/B0034NJ44I ) is the author of the critically acclaimed OSAMA and A MAN LIES DREAMING, and THE BOOKMAN HISTORIES, among other works. We’ve featured Lavie four times, starting with “Post Human Pat” in Issue #10 before we went to a quarterly publication schedule. Then there was “All the Wonder in the World” in the 2nd Q 2006 edition of A&A. His “Out of the Blue” graced our 4th Quarter 2009 pages, and “The Monks of Udom Xhai” was our most recent story from Lavie, in our 2nd Q 2010 edition. Two of those got honorable mentions from YBSF.

I’m running out of space. I could go on and on about our authors: Tony Pi was shortlisted for a Prix Aurora for one of his stories in Abyss & Apex, “Metamorphoses in Amber.”  A&A author A.G. Carpenter was up for a Campbell last year, Mercurio D. Rivera got one of our stories on the Locus Recommended Reading List and is just exploding on the short fiction scene, Paul Carlson has gone on to be a regular in Analog. We expect incredible things from A&A authors like Alan Smale (his CLASH OF EAGLES is coming out soon)

Of course, established writers send us stories, and that helps the newer writers by putting them on the same TOC.

But that, as Kipling would say, is another story.
